This depth of field and circle of confusion calculator offers a comprehensive tool for photographers seeking to optimize their camera settings and achieve precise focus control. Designed to simulate out-of-focus blur, depth of field, and hyperfocal distance across various camera configurations, it also accounts for diffraction effects when using smaller apertures. Blur measurements are provided in pixels relative to the camera sensor, allowing for detailed analysis of image quality.
The simulation illustrates how objects at infinity and at specific distances will appear blurred when printed on a 25 cm or 10-inch medium or displayed on a screen. Users can switch between full-frame view to assess object sizes and a 1/10 frame view focused on evaluating blur effects, enhancing accuracy and detail.
Key parameters include: Distance (to the object), Lens type (focal length), F-number (aperture setting), Focus distance, and Sensor (megapixel count and size). The interface provides modes such as HYPERFOCAL, which automatically sets the focus to the hyperfocal distance based on the current F-value, facilitating optimal depth of field.
The AUTO HYPERFOCAL mode aims to enable both infinity and the subject to be in focus by calculating the minimal F-number and corresponding focus distance. While this mode endeavors to deliver the best possible result, it is important to note that diffraction effects at small apertures may limit sharpness, a factor reflected within the simulation.
An advanced feature, MAX BLUR FOCUS, suggests the closest focus point needed to keep an object at a specified distance sharp while maximizing background blur at a given F-value. This approach is particularly useful when working with higher F-numbers and requires no closer objects within the scene, effectively balancing focus and background separation.
